Aileen Wuornos was a female serial killer in America who murdered seven men during the years 1989 and 1990.Born on 29th February to father Leo Pittman and mother Diane Pratt in Rochester, Michigan; she ended up becoming a prostitute. Aileen Wuornos controversially claimed that the men she killed had raped her or were trying to do so. Aileen was executed on 9th of October, 2002 for six of the seven murders after being convicted for the same. A Fatal injection was administered into her in accordance with the orders of honorable court of Justice.
Aileen Wuornos’s father Pittman was a child molester, her mother left him after two years of their marriage. Wuornos started her life as a criminal when she was 18 and continued with petty crimes like car theft and drunk driving before committing her first murder. Richard Mallory was her first victim on January 14th 1992 for which she was convicted. Psychiatrists in her defense stated that Wuornos suffered from mild multiple personality disorder but she was eventually sentenced to death on January 31, 1992. Wuornos got three more death sentences on 15th May,1992 for the murders of Dick Humphreys,Troy Burress and David Spears. Two more death sentences followed in the months of June,1992 and February, 1993 for the murders of Charles Carskaddon and Walter Gino Anonio respectively.
Wuornos apparently made many stories in the defence of her killings. In an interview given to the filmmaker Nick Broomfield ,when she thought the cameras were off, she said that all of it was actually self-defense, but that she had had enough of being on the death row(12 years which included appeals to High Court and the US Supreme Court) and she would rather be dead. Executed on October the 9th 2002 by a lethal injection, she was only the tenth woman to be executed in the United States after capital punishment was unbanned by the US Supreme Court in 1976, and the second such woman in Florida.
Wuornos finds mention though very brief in FBI profiler Robert K. Ressler’s autobiographical book narrating his twenty years in the FBI. Filmmaker Nick Broomfield made two documentaries namely The Selling of Serial Killer completed in 1994 and A Serial Killer’s Life and Death released during 2003.
Nick Broomfield observed that someone deeply psychotic can not diferentiate between something fatal and some disagreement and that she would yell out in seething anger if she did not agree with something. On the other hand, when she was sane she was capable of admirable humanity.
Charlize Theron alongwith Christina Ricci star in the 2003 released, Monster depicting Wuornos tale of woes that was her life for which Theron got the Best Actress Academy Award.Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco held an opera like show on Wuornos' life 's on June 22nd ,2001.
